Birth Control Pills

I just swallowed the first birth control pill. I'll take one every night until May 17th. Which is my sister's birthday.

I've officially begun the egg donation process!

The name of the BC pill is Apri. (How fitting that it's April.) The tablets contain 0.15 mg of desogestrel and ethinyl estradiol.

I've been on BC pills before to help with cramps. I was taking Seasonale which let me get my period every 3 months which meant cramps only 4 times a year. I loved being on BC. I never really had any of the side effects. Sure I was moody sometimes...but who isn't?!

Hopefully this will be a positive experience.

I can't get over how ironic it is that I'm taking birth control pills to help get a woman pregnant. I don't know how anyone ever figured out how this whole thing works.

I do know that I'm lucky that Pam and my family and friends and even co-workers are all so supportive of my decision to donate my eggs.

This is pretty awesome.

Anonymous said...: I was really happy to find your blog (through your comment on Rae's blog). We are currently in the middle of a donor cycle with a brand new donor (her first time). My daughter was conceived with donor eggs as well, though that donor had given five times before. Our only option with the program that we are in is anonymous donation, so we can't really talk about this with her. So, I will be interested in your perspective! I have been through IVF with my own eggs, so I understand the physical part; it's the thoughts and feelings part that we haven't a clue about.

What Being An Egg Donor Means To Me

To me, donating my eggs was an obvious decision. Since I was a child I've longed to me a Mother. I used to have fears that I'd never get to be pregnant. When I was 21 I fell in love with a woman. We soon realized we'd be together forever, and all of a sudden my path to parenthood had a new twist.

With Pam as my partner I'd never have to worry about birth control or unexpected pregnancies. Then again, I'll never get the chance to carry a child that is both part me and part her. I know that someday we'll rely on a sperm donor to help us create the family we dream about. And that's when it became clear that if I could help a couple conceive I should jump at the chance.

And isn't that what it's all about? Helping people acheive their dreams. Children need loving parents who want them more than anything, and that's something I have in common with the woman who will become a Mother with the eggs I donate. Her dream of carrying a child and the miracle of birth will come true with my help.

The eggs they harvest and take out of my body are not my children. Every month I flush away an egg that I don't even think twice about. And now I have the chance to do something life changing for a woman who is more similar to me than she probably knows. She needs me to give her the gift of my eggs.

The saying, "It takes a village to raise a child" might also read, "And sometimes it takes a stranger to help make that child!"

I consider this the greatest gift I could ever give.
